Aids Cases Found on Rise in Kenya

The number of confirmed AIDS cases in Kenya has risen by more by than 1,000 in the past five months to reach 4,295, a Kenyan doctor told a medical conference in Nairobi.

Dr. G.S. Gachichi of the Kenya Medical Research Institute said Thursday that most of those newly infected by the fatal disease were in the Coastal province, which includes Kenya’s prime tourist resort port of Mombasa.

Last August, Kenya said it had 3,276 confirmed cases of acquired immune deficiency syndrome, which is transmitted mainly through sexual intercourse, blood transfusion and intravenous drug use.
