WORLD : Iran to Hang 70 in Drug Trafficking

NICOSIA, Cyprus —
Iran will hang 70 people convicted of drug trafficking on Tuesday, the Islamic Republic News Agency reported. The previous record for drug-related executions was 56 people hanged Jan. 16.
Iran instituted harsh drug laws Jan. 21 mandating death for anyone found with more than an ounce of heroin or more than 11 pounds of opium or hashish. The IRNA report said 10 convicts will go to the gallows in Tehran and the others in eight provincial capitals and 17 smaller towns.
