The Polish government, in a statement by spokesman Jerzy Urban, expressed cautious optimism about talks with Solidarity, but it warned the banned independent union to “stop pressing us against the wall.” “We want to reform the country, and if this requires the government’s withdrawal from its hitherto policy, that’s something else,” Solidarity spokesman Janusz Onyszkiewicz said in response to Urban’s statement. Meanwhile, Solidarity leader Lech Walesa traveled to Jastrzebie, in the coal-mining region of Silesia, to seek rank-and-file backing for the negotiations dealing with Solidarity’s demand for legalization.
