Catalans, always proud of the things that make them different from other Spaniards, disapprove of bullfighting, according to an opinion poll.

The survey in the northeastern region published Tuesday showed 53% of Catalans questioned thought the sport should be banned, 12% thought it was cruel but should not be stopped and 23% thought it would be acceptable if it did not end with the death of the bull.

Only 8% thought bullfighting was a good thing.

The poll was carried out for the Catalan regional government, which last year became the first in Spain to introduce a law to protect animals against cruelty.

The law does not prevent bullfights at permanent rings.
