NAMES IN THE NEWS : Fonda, Hayden in Trial Separation, Won’t Comment on ‘Private Matter’

Actress and aerobics guru Jane Fonda and her husband of 16 years, Assemblyman Tom Hayden, have separated, a spokesman for the couple said today.

“Tom Hayden and Jane Fonda have decided to separate on a trial basis,” said Stephen Rivers, a longtime spokesman for the couple. “Tom and Jane consider this separation a private matter and will have no public comment or statement on it.”

Fonda and Hayden, one of the radicals tried in the Chicago Seven case, were married in January, 1973, and have two children, Troy, 15, and Vanessa, 20, Fonda’s daughter from her marriage to French film director Roger Vadim. Fonda is 51 and Hayden, co-founder of Students for a Democratic Society, is 49.
