Lawsuit Filed Over Project
Seven residents have filed suit to stop the city’s Redevelopment Agency from seeking construction contracts for a proposed shopping center, claiming the project’s environmental impact report is inadequate.
The suit, filed in Superior Court Feb. 2, asks the court to order the city to nullify its approval of the report for the proposed complex at Rosemead Boulevard and Las Tunas Drive.
The City Council certified the document Jan. 3 and has been negotiating with Champion Development of Long Beach.
About 50 homes and 13 businesses would have to be demolished for construction of the complex, which would cover 7 1/2 acres.
The residents claim the report inadequately addresses the impact the project would have by encouraging more development in the area and damaging the residential quality of the neighborhood.
They also claim the report’s analysis of resulting noise and traffic is incomplete because the proportion of shops, restaurants and offices in the project is still undetermined.
Thomas Parrington, attorney for the Redevelopment Agency, said the city believes the report is adequate.
