From Times staff and wire service reports

The University of Kentucky has filed an affidavit asking that its written response to 18 NCAA allegations against its basketball program not be released to the news media in order to protect the privacy of sources.

The Lexington Herald-Leader and The (Louisville) Courier-Journal have asked a Fayette circuit judge to force the university to release the response under the state’s Open Records law.

“If witnesses do not wish to talk to the news media, then certainly the witnesses will not want to talk to the university in the future if they know (that) what they state to the university will be disclosed by the university to the news media,” James Park Jr., an attorney hired by the university to assist with the response, said in the affidavit.

Park said a disclosure would “seriously affect the university’s ability to carry out any additional investigations.”
