Yacht Sinks, Drugs Don’t; 2 Arrested
From Reuters
CATANZARO, Italy —
Two drug smugglers trapped by the coast guard off southern Italy sought to destroy the evidence by sinking their yacht--but the hashish packed in plastic sacks bobbed to the surface.
Customs officers said they recovered 76 sacks of hashish, weighing two tons.
The two men, an Italian and a Frenchman, were caught trying to flee in a rubber dinghy and were charged with drug smuggling.
The yacht was believed to have left the Yugoslav port of Dubrovnik on Saturday bound for Malta.
