College Roundup : Anteaters Stop a Four-Game Slide in Baseball

UC Irvine ended a four-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory over the University of San Diego in a nonconference baseball game Sunday at San Diego.

Senior left-hander Rob Johnson got the victory, allowing 13 hits in pitching his second complete game of his career. Johnson (2-2) struck out a career-high seven.

The Anteaters (3-7-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Freddy Combs singled home Stacy Parker. San Diego (4-5) tied the score in the bottom of the inning.

Irvine took the lead for good in the third as John Danush doubled to right, scoring Jon Skaggs. In the sixth, Combs again singled home Parker for a 3-1 lead.

Combs and Danush each had two hits.

San Diego brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, as Andy Roberts doubled with two outs. However, Johnson struck out Parris Sorianello to end the game.

In the Wildcat softball tournament at the University of Arizona:

Utah 3, Cal State Fullerton 1--The Utes eliminated the Titans (6-3) behind the pitching of Paula Potter and Janet Womade. Potter went six innings, allowing eight hits, and was relieved by Womade, who pitched the seventh. Chriss Freeman had two hits for Utah. Tiny Glomaboski singled home Fullerton’s only run in the first. Anjie Bryant (3-2) took the loss. Earlier in the day, Fullerton finished pool-play with a 4-2 loss to United States International. Cindy Oliver had two hits for USIU and was also was the winning pitcher. Missy Coombs had three hits and a run batted in for the Titans.

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Kentucky 5, UC Irvine 4--The doubles team of Adam Malik and Richard Benson defeated Mike Briggs and Trevor Kronemann, 7-5, 6-4, to give the Wildcats (2-1) the victory at Kentucky. Irvine’s Mike Cadigan defeated Sammy Stinett, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6, in singles play and then teamed with Aaron Stolpam to defeat Willy Laban and Ian Skidmore, 6-3, 7-5, in doubles action. Irvine is 2-4 on the season.

In the Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn.:

University of Hawaii 3, UC Irvine 0--Allen Allen had 15 kills as Hawaii (11-2) swept, 15-12, 15-8, 15-11, at Irvine. The Anteaters are 3-13 this season.
