Iran, Iraq Military Postpone Meeting on Gulf Cease-Fire
A meeting between military officers from Iran and Iraq scheduled for today to review and strengthen their cease-fire, has been postponed indefinitely, Iraq’s state-run news agency reported Tuesday.
Iraq did not give a reason for the postponement of the talks, scheduled to take place on the Iraqi-Iranian border.
But political observers speculated it may be connected with Iran’s granting of political asylum to three Iraqi prisoners of war supposed to have joined 83 prisoners freed in Tehran on Tuesday.
The Gulf War cease-fire went into effect Aug. 20 after nearly eight years of war between the two neighbors. The Iraqi news agency said consultations between Iran and Iraq through U.N. mediators are expected to begin shortly to arrange a new date for the meeting.
