World : Deposed Paraguayan Asks U.S. Visa
Deposed Paraguayan dictator Alfredo Stroessner has requested a U.S. visa, a Brazilian Foreign Ministry official said today.
The official said the 76-year-old general was awaiting a reply from Washington. “The general has made clear his intention to live in the United States to Brazilian authorities,” said the official, who asked not to be identified. There was no immediate comment from U.S. officials. Stroessner received political asylum from Brazil on Feb. 5, two days after he was overthrown in a bloody coup led by his former second in command, Gen. Andres Rodriguez.
Stroessner’s wife and daughter flew to Miami last week from Paraguay.
