Britain’s opposition Labor Party is neck and neck with the ruling Conservatives for the first time in nearly 2 1/2 years, according to two polls. A Harris poll for the London Observer newspaper gave Labor 42% support, one percentage point ahead of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s Conservatives, after having lagged 10 points behind a month ago in another Harris poll. And a Gallup poll in the London Sunday Telegraph showed the Conservatives, who have been in power since 1979, tied with Labor at 35%.
