Seven people died as Spain was battered by winds of up to 60 m.p.h., and plunging temperatures snapped Britain out of one of its mildest winters in 300 years. In Valencia, the worst hit area of Spain, authorities warned people to stay off the streets. In other areas, air flights were canceled and power outages impaired train services. The temperate British winter was ended by a bout of heavy snow, which brought chaos on the roads from Cornwall to Scotland, and torrential rain, which flooded parts of Wales and southwest England.
