UC Irvine Beats South Carolina to Reach Indoor Tennis Final
Mark Kaplan and Richard Lubner of UC Irvine defeated Steve Longley and Richard Lynch of the University of South Carolina, 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, to give the Anteaters a 5-4 victory in the semifinals of the National Team Indoor tennis tournament Saturday at Louisville, Ky.
The victory by Kaplan and Lubner, the Anteaters’ No. 2 doubles team, proved to be the deciding point in the match, breaking a 4-4 tie. With the victory, seventh-ranked Irvine (5-4) advances to today’s final against fourth-ranked California, a 5-2 victor winner Kentucky.
In singles, Trevor Kronemann defeated Longley 6-2, 6-4; Lubner defeated Lou Gloria, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, and Shige Kanroji defeated Dave Herman, 7-5, 6-3, to help Irvine.
