Nation : ‘Hard-Luck Musher’ Wins Sled Race
A man forced from the Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race by frostbite last year and who entered this year’s race after his house burned down, killing his top dogs, won this year’s race early today.
Jeff King, 33, dubbed the “hard-luck musher” in newspaper headlines, reached the Fairbanks finish line at 6:51 a.m., winning $20,000 in first-place money that King described as “already spent.”
King said the prize money could not have come at a better time in his life. He and his wife are rebuilding their house. His winning time for the 1,100-mile race was 11 days, 19 hours, 7 minutes.
