Quemoy Will Be a Vacation Isle
An island that serves as Taiwan’s front-line fortress off China’s eastern coast will soon be transformed into a tourist resort.
The restricted military base on Quemoy, less than a mile from the Chinese city of Xiamen, will be open to tourists to help raise living standards on the island, Taiwan’s official Central News Agency reported Thursday.
Quemoy’s 50,000 civilian inhabitants have an average per capita income half that of Taiwan residents, according to government statistics.
They are also outnumbered by Nationalist troops on the island, who keep watch on their Chinese adversaries from mountaintop lookout posts and train in cavernous underground bunkers blasted out of hard rock.
