Japan Veteran Kills Self Week After Hirohito Rites

TOKYO — A veteran of the Imperial Army who had planned to commit suicide the day of Emperor Hirohito’s funeral instead killed himself last week to avoid interfering with the funeral, police said Sunday.
Toshio Muratani, 66, shot himself in the head with a pistol in a Tokyo park Friday, a police spokesman said.
