GTE Wins Army Pact: GTE Corp., which operates the largest U.S. independent phone network, has been awarded a $945.8-million contract for the Army’s new Mobile Subscriber Equipment program, a spy-proof battlefield telephone and teleprinter system being designed and built by Stamford, Conn.-based GTE and Thomson-CSF of France. The new system of armored and other communications vehicles will provide multichannel telephones and teleprinters that operate like cellular telephones in major cities.
