Need for National Energy Policy

Your editorial on “gas guzzling” was a fine contribution, which made almost all the important points of this important subject. Since about two-thirds of the U.S. consumption of oil is in transportation, that is where conservation will help most. The federal corporate average fuel economy requirements made a major reduction in gasoline consumption in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, but are now, unfortunately, being relaxed. They should, instead, be enforced and extended beyond the previous maximum of 27 1/2 miles per gallon.
