Britain Leads W. Europe in Prison Population Rate

LONDON —
Britain imprisons proportionately more people than any other major West European country, the National Assn. for the Care and Resettlement of Offenders said Thursday.
It said British prisons held 55,729 people last month, representing 98.2 prisoners for every 100,000 in the population. Comparative figures were Austria 96.0, Finland 93.0 and France 92.0.
