Local News in Brief : Countywide : Abandoned Baby Has Plenty of Takers

Share

About two dozen Orange County families have asked to adopt the infant boy found abandoned outside a medical emergency center in Mission Viejo, officials said Friday.

“It’s a typical response” to news about an abandoned baby, said William Steiner, director of the Orangewood Foundation, which supports the county’s home for abused and abandoned children.

Brett was only 1 or 2 days old when a center worker discovered him Thursday wrapped in a brown bath towel along with a bag of diapers, a $20 bill and a note asking someone to find him “a good, safe home.”

Doctors said that the 9-pound infant was in good condition. His umbilical cord was still attached, indicating that he wasn’t born at a hospital, officials said.

Steiner said Brett would remain at UCI Medical Center over the weekend for further tests and observation. He will be transferred to the Orangewood children’s home next week, Steiner said.

The baby can’t be adopted “until there is a court hearing and some effort to contact the natural parents,” he added.
