Leader Joe Runyon reached Kaltag, Alaska, along the frozen Yukon River with four others close behind in the 1,168-mile Anchorage-to-Nome Iditarod Sled Dog Race.
Behind Runyan were Rick Swenson, 38, the only four-time winner of the Iditarod; Susan Butcher, 34, winner of the last three Iditarods; Dee Dee Jonrowe, 36, winner of Minnesota’s 500-mile John Beargrease race, and Martin Buser, 30, a Swiss citizen who is one of Alaska’s top mushers.
