Clarinetist Ricardo Morales-Matos, 17, of Bloomington, Ind., won the grand prize at the eighth annual Seventeen magazine and General Motors Concerto Competition Monday night at USC: a solo appearance with the Chicago Symphony at a date to be selected.

Only the fifth grand-prize winner in the history of the competition, Morales-Matos bested his fellow finalists, pianist Marta Aznavoorian, 16, of Barrington, Ill. and violinist Rachel Barton, 14, of Chicago, during the finals, performed with the USC Symphony in Bovard Auditorium. All three will receive $5,000 scholarships.
