Major U.S. Jewish groups are calling on Jews around the world to boycott meetings with Pope John Paul II because the Vatican has failed to remove a convent from the site of the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz, the World Jewish Congress announced today.

The U.S. section of the World Jewish Congress, which represents 34 American groups, adopted a resolution that calls for congress members in 70 countries to refrain from meetings with the Pope during his frequent travels. The resolution, adopted at a meeting of organization leaders in New York, will be introduced at the May 7 meeting of the congress’s international executive body in Montreal.
