‘Amos ‘n’ Andy’ Writer

It is most regrettable that Stephen Silverman has nothing better to do with his time than to resurrect racial stereotypes by producing a musical based on the old radio and television shows, “Amos ‘n’ Andy” (re Daniel Cerone’s article “Another Amos ‘n’ Andy?”).
Sensing the outrage of African-Americans over the demeaning series, CBS had the good sense to withdraw the show from syndication over 20 years ago.
Silverman and other producers of his ilk are apparently oblivious of the potential devastation that another theatrical stereotype, no matter how well-intentioned, will have on black people.
The media’s demeaning depiction of black people is, at the very least, partly responsible for the resurgence of racism among white skinheads and college students. It is time Hollywood and Broadway cease contributing to such evils under First Amendment cover.
