Some parents of children from the Ecclesia Athletic Assn. have been ordered to pay child support to the state of Oregon, which took custody of 53 youngsters from the group after the beating death of an 8-year-old girl.

Phil Lemman, a spokesman for the state Department of Justice, said Friday that 18 Ecclesia parents who are living in Oregon have been ordered to pay a total of $4,596 a month as long as their children are in state custody.

Meanwhile, a lawyer representing one of four Ecclesia members charged with manslaughter in the girl’s death said Eldridge J. Broussard Jr., founder of the group, has ended a 40-day personal retreat and has begun meeting again with attorneys in the case.
