Comedian Takes Her Act to Century City

CAROL BURNETT is buying a condo in Century City and selling her house in Pacific Palisades.

Both properties are in escrow: the condo, for about $2 million; the house, for a bit more than the $2.45-million asking price.

The new condo, a detached home, is in the gated Century Woods Estates, developed by Watt Luxury Housing. The unit is just being completed, and the actress/comedian’s decorators are working on the 5,500-square-foot interiors to suit her taste.

Burnett’s previous home, which reportedly sold the first day it went on the market, is also behind gates and has ocean and canyon views, but real estate sources have described it as an “unpretentious though charming Cape Cod.” Public records show that the two-story house, built in 1965, has five bedrooms and five baths in 3,945 square feet. She paid about $1.1 million for the Cape Cod in 1985.

Burnett was on ABC-TV earlier this month in the tribute to Elizabeth Taylor.

MEL GIBSON, who stars in Interscope-Universal’s “Bird on a Wire,” shooting this month, must be planning to stay away from his native Australia for a while.

He bought a Malibu house owned by actor/singer/songwriter Rick Springfield and his wife, Barbara, and has already moved into it.

Gibson paid almost the $3-million list price for the three-bedroom, four-bath house in the Serra Retreat area, Malibu sources say.

The one-story, Mediterranean-style house was built in 1979 and has two fireplaces and a pool. But the home might be a bit small for Gibson’s family. He has five children.

PETER GUBER, co-executive producer of the Dustin Hoffman/Tom Cruise movie “Rain Man,” has purchased a home in Malibu Colony from entrepreneur Ken Roberts.

The purchase price, $4.5 million, is believed to be the highest price ever paid for a home in the Colony.

Roberts, who sold radio station KROC for $45 million last year, acquired the property, once owned by actress Lana Turner, and practically demolished the existing house, which was built in 1964.

“Everything in it is new,” said Kathy Villa of Asher Dann & Associates, who had the listing. Carol Rapf of Jim Rapf & Associates represented Guber.

The contemporary house has four bedrooms and a maid’s quarters in 5,500 square feet with 50 feet of beach front. Roberts bought the property about 18 months ago but never lived there.

“He bought it to live in but bought a place in Trump Towers in New York instead,” Villa said.

Roberts also has been living at his 113-acre Mandeville Canyon ranch, which he has listed with Villa at $27 million. “He may buy another house at the beach and fix it up,” Villa said, “but he’s doing a lot of business in New York. He’s in negotiations to buy a hotel there.”

JON PETERS, the other co-executive producer of “Rain Man,” entered escrow a few weeks ago on a $6-million plus house in Beverly Park, above Beverly Hills. “Rain Man” had eight Academy Award nominations, the most of any other movie released last year.)

“Bunny Hill,” the Holmby Hills estate of the late BONITA (BUNNY) GRANVILLE WRATHER and JACK WRATHER, is on the market for $9.5 million. The 7,149-square-foot house sits on about two acres.

Designed by Byron Vandergriff of Beverly Hills, the home was built by the Wrathers about 1947.

“It was a nice family home, where they raised their three children. It was a house that was lived in and loved,” said Brooke Whitney Pattengill, who shares the listing with John Aaroe, both of the Jon Douglas Co. Bunny Wrather died last October, and her husband died in 1984.

The two-story home has five bedrooms upstairs and maid’s quarters downstairs. It is traditional in style with wood siding and Bouquet Canyon stone.

Actress JODIE FOSTER was honored last week at a party celebrating her Oscar nomination in the just-completed Coldwater Canyon house of her attorney, Matthew Saver, of the Beverly Hills law firm Rosenfeld, Meyer & Susman.

Architect Stephen Ball of Brentwood and Saver worked together on the 4,000-square-foot, five-level design, which has such features as ash hardwood floors, covered with 75 coats of lacquer, topped with car polish. The house also has skylights decorated with neon and a dining room that looks like a greenhouse.

Among Saver’s other clients are actress Kristy McNichol and actor Corey Haim.
