Self-Help Needed

Share

Regarding the letter from Elana Peters (Feb. 19) commenting on “As America Ages. . . .”

Elana Peters iterates one of the most flagrant misunderstandings in our society: that the elderly should be able to save their money for their children and let the taxpayers care for their needs.

People should save for their own care. Taxpayers then can save for their old age care. The “kids” can save for themselves if they aren’t paying for old people hoarding for heirs.

Of course, some people will need help, and we want to help them. But if a reverse mortgage is needed, get one! It’s the responsible, decent, dignified move to make.

We can’t take it with us, and our children are getting along without it. And taxpayers are overburdened.

Also, it’s the only fair thing to do.
