IBM to Sell Compatible Mainframes: IBM Japan, turning the tables on its Japanese competition, will sell mainframe computers compatible with those of Fujitsu and Hitachi, an IBM spokesman said. The two companies, starting from far behind, have over the years grabbed just slightly more than half the domestic Japanese market with mainframes compatible with those of International Business Machines Corp. Now wholly owned IBM Japan will offer 4300 and 3090 mainframes able to run software written for Hitachi and Fujitsu machines.
