A man from Yemen has been charged with illegally exporting 70 tons of elephant ivory worth $9.8 million, a newspaper said Sunday.

Police said Mohamed Sulaiman Alfan shipped the tusks on March 7 to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. He faces a possible 14 years in prison. High international prices for ivory are fueling widespread poaching that has cut Africa’s elephant population in half since the late 1970s, according to a 1987 U.N. environmental study.
