Local News in Brief : Long Beach Drafting Assault Guns Ban

Share

The Long Beach City Council, brushing aside the recommendations of two of its committees, is drawing up a proposal to outlaw the sale of military-style assault weapons in the city.

Although the committees had suggested such a ban was better left to the state Legislature, the council voted Tuesday to ask the city attorney to prepare an ordinance to ban such assault rifles. It will be up for a vote April 4.

Unlike laws passed this year in Los Angeles and Compton that prohibit both the sale and possession of semi-automatic assault rifles such as the AK-47, the proposed Long Beach ban at this point would only prohibit their sale.
