Iran has agreed to military contracts and large weapons purchases from East Bloc countries in rejection of Western political and economic pressures, Reuters news agency said, quoting unnamed Iranian sources. The sources said that Czechoslovakia will supply about 180 Soviet T-54/55 tanks that it makes under license and build a factory in Esfahan to produce anti-tank and anti-aircraft missiles. Romania is helping modernize a tractor factory in Arak, southwest of Tehran, to produce armored vehicles, they said, adding that construction by Romania of a new naval base on Qeshm island in the Strait of Hormuz is under discussion.
