From Times staff and wire service reports
SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador —
President Jose Napoleon Duarte left San Salvador today for treatment in Washington of his terminal liver and stomach cancer, and a staff member said his health has deteriorated badly.
“Duarte’s condition is very grave. He is seriously ill,” said the aide, who asked not to be identified. He said Duarte, 62, is accompanied by his wife, Ines Guadalupe Duran de Duarte, and his personal physician, Dr. Jose Luis Saca, and will be treated at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
