In Brief : Games Move to West Germany

The West German city of Duisburg will stage a scaled-down University Games in August after Sao Paulo, the original host of the 1989 World Student Games, bowed out two months ago because of Brazil’s financial woes.

Kiev, the only other city still in the running until today, had hoped to organize a full-scale Universiade. But it dropped out because it could not get ready in time. Today’s decision by the International Federation of University Sports ended a frantic two-month search for an alternative site for the world’s largest multisports event outside the Olympics. The Universiade is held every two years. The games will be held Aug. 20 to 30.
