The U.S. Navy is looking into allegations that its ships have been dumping waste, garbage and toxic chemical compounds within the territorial waters of Bahrain. Lt. Frank Thorp, spokesman for the U.S. task force in the Persian Gulf, said the allegations were probably not true, because “the U.S. Navy is really strict, and by that I mean very, very strict, with regard to our environment-related regulations.” His comment followed a report by the Dubai newspaper Khaleej Times that it had received a letter from a U.S. Marine alleging “frequent and flagrant violations of the environmental laws of the gulf countries” by American warships.
