The World : Turks Warn Iran on Scarfs
Turkey warned Iran not to meddle in its affairs after Tehran’s Shiite Muslim government again criticized Turkey’s decision to ban Muslim-style head scarfs at Turkish universities. “It is impossible to accept outside efforts to become a party to Turkey’s internal affairs which solely concern its own people and state,” the Foreign Ministry said. On March 7, Turkey’s highest court annulled a parliamentary bill that would have allowed women to wear head scarfs on campuses. Turkey, a predominantly Sunni Muslim but secular country, has been especially wary of Islamic fundamentalism.
