The Hazard Brick and Block plant in Mission Valley will be replaced soon with a $200-million center that will be one of the largest mixed-use projects in San Diego County.
Known as Hazard Center, the 42-acre development will replace the 30-year headquarters for R.E. Hazard’s concrete manufacturing and sales operations and its engineering and grading contracting business. R.E. Hazard built more than $500 million in highways in San Diego County.
When completed at California 163 and Friars Road, Hazard Center will have offices, retail space, a hotel, restaurants and residential units.
Construction has begun on the $120-million first phase, which is expected to be completed in the spring of 1990. Phase I will include a 15-story, 292,000-square-foot office tower, a 135,000-square-foot specialty retail center called “The Brickyard,” with exclusive shops and restaurants, and a 238,000-square-foot, 300-room Red Lion Inn hotel with several restaurants, a lounge and a full-service health club.
A seven-screen Mann Theatre complex and a food court are also planned.
Developed by Crow-Hazard Associates, a joint venture of Trammell Crow Co. and R.E. Hazard Contracting Co., Hazard Center is being constructed by Snyder-Langston Builders of Irvine. SGPA Planning & Architecture is designing The Brickyard, and Arechaederra, Hong, Treiman of Santa Monica is designing the office tower.
