A mob with machetes attacked and seriously wounded seven U.S. missionaries in Haiti after a pickup truck carrying the Americans accidentally ran over two Haitians, Radio Haiti-Inter reported. The report said the seven Free Methodist Church missionaries were hospitalized in serious condition with multiple machete wounds and that the two Haitians suffered broken legs. The radio station said the attack occurred after the pickup truck went out of control on a highway near Leogane, about 18 miles southeast of Port-au-Prince, and plowed into the Haitians. In Washington, a State Department official put the number of Americans injured at 12 but said none was seriously hurt.
