Britain on Wednesday became the first Western nation to send relief aid to victims of recent floods in Marxist-ruled South Yemen, airport officials said.

Britain sent 30,000 tons of medicine and tents Wednesday to its former colony, where floods have killed at least 23 people and caused damage estimated in the millions of dollars.

Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Yemen have sent planeloads of food and other emergency supplies to South Yemen, one of the world’s poorest nations.

Officials said more rain is expected in the usually dry regions of eastern South Yemen. Rain normally falls in the highlands north of Aden along the Red Sea coast, and some citizens in Hadhramaut said they have not seen such a deluge in over 50 years.
