America’s Cup Ruling Puts Order in the Port, If Not the Open Seas

Share

Being a good sport means accepting the umpire’s decision. I can agree with Dennis Conner and Brian Bilbray that perhaps we should just go down under and win the America’s Cup back up again. That’ll show the Kiwis. But at the same time, when the umpire (Judge Carmen Ciparick) who has made several rulings seems to contradict herself during the course of the game, it seems to me that an appeal is warranted. The port and other governmental entities have spent well over $500,000 in public funds preparing for the Cup’s defense here in 1991, not to mention an expected $1 billion infusion to our local economy. I feel there is a fiduciary responsibility to the taxpayers of San Diego that the ruling be appealed. I’m confident we would prevail.
