Syrian gunners and their Muslim Lebanese allies, ending a brief lull in the shelling war, bombarded Christian areas of Beirut, killing at least four people and wounding at least three others. Security officials said about 200 shells and rockets fell at the rate of three a minute on residential areas in Christian East Beirut and nearby areas. Mainly Christian troops under army commander Maj. Gen. Michel Aoun, who sparked the latest strife by closing illegal ports that provide funds for Lebanese militias and vowing to drive Syrian troops from Lebanon, quickly retaliated with a brief barrage against Muslim West Beirut, the officials said.
