New PBS Chairman Nominated
Ted Capener, vice president for university relations at the University of Utah, has been nominated to be the next board chairman of the Public Broadcasting Service, it was announced today.
If the nomination is approved by PBS’s board of directors at a scheduled April 12 meeting, Capener will succeed Alfred Stern, who served as chairman for four years.
Capener, a University of Utah vice president since 1985, is responsible for the school’s state and federal relations, intercollegiate athletics, alumni affairs, public relations and media services.
He also heads the advisory board of KUED-TV, the university’s public station, and is host of “Civic Dialogue,” a weekly program on the station.
Capener began his broadcasting career in 1958 with Bonneville International Corp.’s KSL Radio in Salt Lake City. From 1964 to 1972, he was vice president for news and public affairs at KSL. He also was head of Bonneville’s Washington bureau for nine years. In 1983, he was named Bonneville’s senior vice president for news, public affairs and research.
