Work begins on the Jimmy Carter Memorial Park this week in a Charlotte, N.C., neighborhood that the former President helped to revive. Carter plans to be in Charlotte on May 22 for the dedication. Fourteen houses were built in the neighborhood, known as Optimist Park, during Habitat for Humanity’s Jimmy Carter Work Project, a five-day volunteer construction project in July, 1987. The park was Carter’s idea. “Besides building houses, Carter realized that kids needed a place to play,” said Beth Maczka, a local Habitat official.
