Altadena : Water for Project Disputed

Share

About 50 residents opposed to a proposed development in northwest Altadena urged the local water company Monday to remain neutral in dealings with the developers.

The loosely organized Concerned Shareholders of Lincoln Avenue Water Co. formed last month after the company released its 1988 operations report. Residents who tap into the water system are automatically made shareholders.

Some were upset to read in the report that the company had agreed to supply water to the controversial La Vina development, said John Hafner, chairman of the group.

“We were concerned that it was a tacit political endorsement,” he said. Hafner is also a member of Friends of La Vina, a residents group that opposes the proposed construction of 270 homes on the 220-acre hillside property.

But Robert Hayward, manager of the water company, told residents at the annual shareholders meeting Monday that state law obligates the company to provide water to properties within its 15-square-mile service area.
