Australia’s most wanted man, an apparent fugitive from West Germany, was captured after a two-week manhunt across much of the outback. John Friedrich was caught near Perth, capital of Western Australia state, after driving 1,850 miles. Friedrich was sought after he vanished March 21 from Melbourne, leaving the country’s largest civilian search and rescue company $180 million in debt and near collapse. A West German newspaper said Friedrich may be the man who faked his own death in 1974 after a $200,000 fraud in West Germany.
