The World Health Organization today awarded Surgeon General C. Everett Koop a special medal for his outspoken crusade against the health hazards posed by tobacco and smoking.

Koop, the top U.S. public health official since 1982, is a well-known leader in the effort to create “smoke-free” societies, repeatedly warning people that smoking increases the risk of many diseases.

For his work in the field, Koop received the WHO “Tobacco or Health” medal in ceremonies in Washington marking the 41st annual World Health Day, which commemorates the founding of WHO.
