A Muslim theologian and mentor of Egypt’s Islamic radicals was arrested after clashes between fundamentalists and police, Egyptian authorities said. Eight people were injured when riot police and Muslim militants demonstrating against the government exchanged shots in the town of Fayoum, 60 miles southwest of Cairo. Among those detained was Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman, a fiery preacher regarded by many members of the underground Islamic Jihad movement as their guide. Abdel-Rahman, 52, was once charged with inciting the killing of President Anwar Sadat, assassinated by Islamic Jihad members in 1981, but was acquitted for lack of evidence.
