Florida Gov. Bob Martinez called out National Guard helicopter crews to help fight wildfires raging over the countryside in four counties. Gusty winds hampered efforts to control the blazes and drought conditions throughout the state had disaster officials on the alert for further outbreaks. State forestry officials said 20,000 acres had been burned in western Dade County, near the southern tip of the state, 6,000 acres in Lafayette and Taylor counties in the north, and about 3,000 acres in Hendry County, in the south-central part of the state.
