WORLD : Athens Delays Extradition Request
The Greek Supreme Court, guarded by 1,000 police after threats by leftist guerrillas, today postponed its hearing on a U.S. extradition request for a suspected Palestinian bomber.
Five judges, reviewing a U.S. demand that Mohammed Rashid be handed over, opened the hearing after months of delay but quickly announced a one-week postponement until April 18. Court President Vassilios Lambridis said the delay was needed because one of the judges became ill.
The United States wants Rashid to stand trial for a bomb blast on a Pan American airliner bound for Honolulu in 1982. A Japanese teen-ager was killed and 15 other passengers were wounded.
