The Bush Administration has temporarily blocked a Japanese company from buying a U.S. manufacturer involved in nuclear weapons production, the Energy Department said today.

Tokuyama Soda Co. of Tokyo, a major producer of chlorine and caustic soda, is seeking to buy General Ceramics of Haskell, N.J., a $30-million-a-year ceramics manufacturer, for $59 million.

Douglas Elmets, an Energy Department spokesman, said the General Ceramics sales was being blocked, adding, “We’re speaking with them to resolve the situation.” Elmets said he could provide no other details.
